Huddersfield Giants Coach Ian Watson Defends Record Amidst Criticism

Rugby League Results: Huddersfield Giants Coach Defends Record Amidst Criticism

Huddersfield, UK – April 25, 2023 – Under pressure Huddersfield Giants coach, Ian Watson, has launched a passionate defense of his record at the club in the face of criticism from the club’s fans.

Despite a run of wins in March that thrust the Giants into playoff contention, a difficult April saw them slide back from Super League’s top six. Watson, who joined Huddersfield in 2020, has overseen a mixed period with the Giants, which includes reaching the Challenge Cup final in 2022 and the semi-final this year, though they ultimately fell short against the Wigan Warriors on both occasions.

In the league, Watson’s tenure has been marked by a number of below-par finishes, with the Giants finishing ninth in his first season and again in 2023. However, they did achieve a third-place finish in 2022. Despite the team’s current eighth-place standing, Watson believes his side are on the right track and can still achieve great things this season.

“I don’t read it, I don’t see it, so it doesn’t really bother me. I’m not going to take advice from people who never achieved anything or want to have a little bit of a pot shot at certain things.”

The coach emphasized his sole focus is on doing his job to the best of his ability and providing the players with what they need to succeed. “As long as I’m doing that and I’m respected by the players and I’m giving them the right things then I’m doing my job. What I can’t control is what people say on the outside.”

Watson believes that if his side can improve their performance and capitalize on the narrow defeats they have suffered in recent weeks, the results will start to come.

“There’s a lot of hell of a lot of close games. Would be a love to have won them. If we won them three games would they all be saying it? Because we’d be sat at pretty top at 16 points.”

The Huddersfield Giants coach remains steadfast in his belief that he is the right person to lead the club forward, and he is focused on continuing to do his job to the best of his ability.
