Rugby League Standout George Williams Overcomes Early Shyness to Lead England
George Williams, the 29-year-old star of the Warrington Wolves, has become a key player for the English national team, even being named captain in 2023. Despite his incredible talent, Williams admits that he struggled with imposter syndrome and shyness early in his career.
Growing up in Wigan, Williams would watch his older teammates, such as Sean O’Loughlin and Liam Farrell, and felt like he couldn’t match their vocal leadership. However, his move to the Canberra Raiders in Australia’s NRL proved to be a turning point, as coach Ricky Stuart worked with him to find his voice and become more confident on the pitch.
“It was obvious what I needed to work on and he worked with me really well and within six months I felt like I probably found my voice, probably less, so that was brilliant for my development,” Williams said.
Since returning to England in 2021, Williams has become a fixture for the Warrington Wolves, making 65 appearances for the club. His impressive performances have earned him the England captaincy, and he now sees young fans wearing his name and number on their jerseys, a sight he says he’ll appreciate even more once his playing days are over.
“I was that fan once so I always give my time, no matter where it is,” Williams said. “It’s enjoyable, it’s good that some kids can look up to me now because I was that kid once.”
As a key player for both his club and country, George Williams has overcome his early shyness to become a vocal leader on the rugby league pitch, inspiring the next generation of English talent.
