Fijian Prop Joe Taira Returns to Rochdale Hornets for Third Stint

Experienced Fijian Prop Joe Taira Rejoins Rochdale Hornets for Third Stint

Rochdale, UK – League 1 outfit Rochdale Hornets have announced the signing of Fijian prop Joe Taira, who will return to the Crown Oil Arena for a third time. The 35-year-old forward first joined the Hornets in 2016 and has since amassed 104 appearances for the club.

Taira’s professional career began with Rochdale, where he spent 70 games between 2016 and 2018. He then joined Batley Bulldogs for two seasons before returning to the Hornets in 2021, adding a further 34 appearances over the following two years. After a brief stint with community club Rochdale Mayfield, Taira has now agreed to a one-year deal with Rochdale Hornets for the 2025 season.

Although Taira did not earn a cap for Fiji due to his 2022 appearance against England being a World Cup warm-up game, the forward is considered a one-time international for the Bati.

“I’m buzzing to be back at the place I started my professional career, and I find it fitting that it’s where I will end it. Coming towards the end of my career, I just want to prove my worth one more time, get stuck into pre-season training and go from there.”

Rochdale Hornets head coach Gary Thornton praised the signing, stating:

“I’m really pleased to have Joe back in the fold. His uncompromising style in attack and defence will be a big benefit for us next year. He was a popular and well-respected member of the group in his previous spells at the club, and with his experience, he will be a welcome addition to our 2025 squad.”

The Hornets finished third in League 1 last season but were ultimately knocked out of the play-offs at home by eventual winners Hunslet, who secured promotion.
