A Semi-Professional Side Releases Ex-Leigh Leopards Star Blake Ferguson
Ex-Australia international Blake Ferguson, who played a pivotal role in Leigh Leopards’ 2022 promotion from the Championship, has been released by the semi-professional Kurri Kurri Bulldogs.
Ferguson, a former seven-cap Kangaroos representative and nine-time New South Wales State of Origin player, has faced numerous off-field controversies throughout his career. Despite his on-field success, the 34-year-old’s latest incident is likely to end any hopes of a return to the top level.
After signing with the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs, who play in the Newcastle Rugby League competition, Ferguson managed just one appearance for the club before having his contract terminated by mutual agreement. Newcastle Rugby League general manager Adam Devcich confirmed the decision, stating, “Blake was signed by Kurri but the club has released him from his obligations. His contract has been terminated by mutual agreement. That is all that we or the club will say. Neither party will make any further comment.”
The details surrounding Ferguson’s release have not been disclosed, but reports suggest his former teammates are “furious at his alleged conduct.”
This incident is the latest in a long line of off-field misdemeanors for Ferguson, which have included:
- A 2013 conviction for indecent assault
- An alleged drinking session that led to his dropping from the New South Wales State of Origin squad in 2017
- An arrest for alleged cocaine possession that saw his contract with the Paramatta Eels torn up
Despite his impressive on-field performances, including his crucial role in Leigh’s promotion-winning campaign and the RFL 1895 Cup victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Ferguson’s career continues to be overshadowed by his off-field troubles. This latest incident at Kurri Kurri Bulldogs appears to signal the end of his hopes of returning to the top level of the sport.
