Daryl Clark Cements Legacy Among Super League’s Greatest Hookers
Daryl Clark further etched his name into Super League’s record books on Sunday, cementing his place among the competition’s all-time great hookers with a standout performance in St Helens’ win at London.
Clark scored a remarkable seven-minute hat-trick as the Saints cruised to a comfortable victory in the capital, keeping themselves firmly in the hunt for the top spot in Super League this season.
But where does Clark rank among the competition’s top try-scoring hookers? This is a stellar list – and one that the St Helens star has firmly placed himself within after moving past one of Super League’s greatest ever number nines over the weekend.
The list solely includes tries scored in Super League and Super League play-off matches, excluding competitions like the Qualifiers and the Super 8s. All stats courtesy of the Rugby League Record Keepers Club.
Top Try-Scoring Hookers in Super League History
- Keiron Cunningham – 136 tries
- James Roby – 97 tries
- Terry Newton – 78 tries
- James Lowes – 69 tries
- Micky Higham – 58 tries
- Shaun Lunt – 57 tries
- Jon Clarke – 57 tries
- Ryan Hudson – 53 tries
- Daryl Clark – 49 tries
- Matt Parcell – 48 tries
Sitting in 10th place is Hull KR’s Matt Parcell, one of only two hookers still playing in the 2024 season. The Australian has proven to be one of the best imports in Super League history, instrumental in the Robins’ resurgence in recent years.
Next up is former Huddersfield, Castleford and Wakefield hooker Ryan Hudson, who finished his career with over 50 tries in the competition.
“One of Super League’s most iconic hookers throughout the 2000s, Jon Clarke was a constant figure for Warrington Wolves before ending his career with Widnes Vikings.”
Another hooker synonymous with the competition during the 2000s and 2010s, former Hull KR, Huddersfield and Leeds Rhinos number nine Shaun Lunt enjoyed a prolific try-scoring record from the position.
Micky Higham, who enjoyed success outside of Super League as well as in it, is in an exclusive club of players to have reached 550 career appearances in the modern era, a truly astonishing feat.
Where Clark will rank among these greats in the years to come remains to be seen, but his hat-trick heroics on Sunday have further solidified his status as one of the competition’s all-time great number nines.
