Rugby League Veteran McGuire Committed to Castleford Tigers, Dismisses Leeds Rhinos Return Rumors
In a recent interview with Love Rugby League, seasoned rugby league star Danny McGuire has reiterated his loyalty to the Castleford Tigers, effectively ruling out a potential return to the Leeds Rhinos as part of the club’s new-look coaching setup.
Despite admitting his desire to become a head coach in the future, following a successful interim spell in charge of Hull KR, McGuire expressed his contentment with his current role at Castleford under the guidance of Craig Lingard. “Leeds will always be a massive part of my life and I’ll always love the club, so that will never change,” he said. “But right now I’m really happy with what I’m doing here at Cas.”
The departure of Rohan Smith from the Headingley helm has sparked speculation about McGuire’s potential return to the Rhinos, either as an assistant or even as the head coach, given his illustrious playing career with the club. However, the rugby league veteran has made it clear that his focus remains on continuing his coaching development with the Tigers.
“I’ve got the desire to become a head coach one day, but I feel I’m doing the hard yards and really serving my apprenticeship in coaching,” McGuire explained. “I probably need to give it a shot at some point, having really enjoyed my time in interim charge of Hull KR. But like I say I’m happy cracking on with learning my trade here at Cas for now.”
The search for Smith’s successor at Leeds Rhinos has generated a buzz, with names like Aussie duo Brad Arthur and Jason Demetriou, as well as Salford boss Paul Rowley, being touted as the leading candidates. McGuire acknowledged the credibility of these potential candidates, stating, “They’re all decent, experienced coaches and all three would probably do a good job in my opinion.”
As an experienced rugby league player turned coach, McGuire’s commitment to his current role with the Castleford Tigers and his dismissal of a potential return to the Leeds Rhinos showcases his dedication to his ongoing coaching development and the desire to make his mark on the sport in his own way.
