Castleford Tigers Explore Move for Leigh Leopards Prop Ben Nakubuwai
Castleford Tigers have been in discussions regarding a potential move for Leigh Leopards prop Ben Nakubuwai, as revealed by Love Rugby League on Monday. This potential transfer could have significant implications for a number of clubs across the Super League competition.
The Tigers are actively searching the Super League market for potential recruits after a disappointing start to the new season, and Nakubuwai has emerged as a player of interest for Castleford’s head coach, Craig Lingard.
However, there is a slight complication, as the Tigers would need to release an existing overseas player to facilitate a move for Nakubuwai. Albert Vete appears to be the most likely player in this category to be released from his contract.
If Vete is released, it would enable Castleford to pursue the acquisition of Nakubuwai. This move would, in turn, have a direct impact on Nakubuwai’s current club, Leigh.
Love Rugby League understands that the Leopards would then accelerate their long-held ambition to secure a deal to sign Newcastle Knights winger David Armstrong, with a move likely to be finalized relatively quickly.
Leigh have been working to potentially find a way to free up space on their overseas quota, but had to put those plans on hold in recent weeks due to a long list of injuries to key personnel, including captain John Asiata and prop Tom Amone. However, with Amone now back fit and Asiata also closing in on a return, the Leopards are open to Nakubuwai leaving for pastures new, with Castleford a potential destination.
The injury to Gareth O’Brien would also push a deal for Armstrong high up Leigh’s priority list, as they see the Newcastle Knights winger as a player who can capably fill the fullback role at the Super League level.
Castleford’s Recruitment Drive
Castleford’s recruitment drive would not end with the arrival of Nakubuwai. As reported elsewhere, they are also looking to secure a deal for Hull KR outside back Louis Senior, and the Tigers have the salary cap space and resources to potentially pursue even more business in the coming weeks.
Elsewhere in the Super League
Elsewhere, Hull FC are in talks with players on both sides of the world, but Super League clubs are hesitant to trim their squads too much at this stage of the season. However, with the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup now coming to a close, a number of sides may be more open to players leaving on short-term deals, as they would not be cup-tied.
