Round 8 of the NRL Season: Brits Down Under Shine
Several England internationals have made their mark in Round 8 of the NRL season. This week’s “Brits Down Under” feature focuses on the standout performances of these British players in the league.
Dom Young, the towering Roosters winger, made a triumphant return from suspension, finishing as the game’s top metre-maker in his team’s 60-18 demolition of the Dragons. He recorded an impressive 222 metres from 18 carries, including three line breaks and a try.
Tom Burgess, the England test prop, played 35 minutes across two stints for South Sydney in their 54-20 defeat to Melbourne. While he produced 77 metres from nine carries and made 19 tackles, he also missed five tackles as the Rabbitohs succumbed to a heavy loss.
John Bateman, the former Wigan Warriors forward, was the top tackler for the Wests Tigers in their 34-10 home defeat to Brisbane, producing 45 tackles with a 97% efficiency. He also made 118 metres from 17 carries and three offloads in an outstanding individual display.
Kai Pearce-Paul, the England international, continued to impress for Newcastle, delivering a strong performance in their win over the Dolphins. He made 142 metres from 18 carries and 27 tackles, with a tackle efficiency of 87%.
Morgan Smithies, the Wigan Warriors academy product, played 63 minutes for the Canberra Raiders in their 40-0 home defeat to the Cronulla Sharks, making 105 metres from 16 carries and 37 tackles.
