Bald, Dressed in Blue and Yellow: The Familiar Face of Brad Arthur Linked to Take Over at Leeds Rhinos
A familiar sight for Leeds Rhinos fans, a bald man with a strong Australian accent could soon be taking over the reins at the club. Brad Arthur, affectionately known as ‘BA,’ has emerged as a leading candidate to replace the outgoing Rohan Smith.
Arthur’s coaching style and pedigree couldn’t be more different from the incumbent Rhinos boss. Sacked as Parramatta Eels’ head coach in May after a dismal start to the 2023 season, Arthur had led the team to a Grand Final appearance as recently as 2022, a testament to his decade-long success with the club.
While the decision to part ways with Arthur came as a surprise, it was arguably the right time for a change. The Eels’ roster needed a regeneration, and the team had become stuck between two eras. Arthur’s management of the interchange and his reliance on star props Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Junior Paulo had become a major flaw, contributing to several poor results.
“Arthur’s players remained firmly in his corner, rallying around him with gifts, messages, and visits following his dismissal. This speaks to the respect and loyalty he commands, a trait that could serve him well at Leeds.”
Should Arthur take the reins at Headingley, he will face a different challenge than he did at Parramatta. The Rhinos are in a materially different situation, and Arthur will have to adapt his coaching style to the existing squad. But his track record of success, his understanding of pressure and expectations, and his ability to connect with players make him an intriguing proposition for Leeds.
While Arthur’s playing style has been criticized as outdated, his teams’ ability to trouble the league’s elite, such as the dominant Penrith Panthers, showcases his tactical acumen. A move to Super League could be the next step in his coaching journey, and Leeds fans may be in for a familiar yet distinct sight on the sidelines.
