Bevan French Dedicates Wigan Challenge Cup Victory to Rob Burrow

Rugby League Superstar Bevan French Dedicates Wigan Challenge Cup Triumph to Late Mentor Rob Burrow

Wigan, UK, May 28, 2023 – In a deeply poignant moment, Bevan French, the Lance Todd Trophy winner, has revealed that Wigan Warriors’ Challenge Cup success holds extra significance for him, given the recent passing of legendary rugby league figure Rob Burrow.

The Australian half-back was the standout player in Wigan’s 18-8 victory over Warrington Wolves at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, collecting almost 75% of the media votes to be named man of the match. However, French’s personal triumph was tinged with bittersweet emotions, as he reflected on the loss of Burrow, a revered figure in the sport who had also battled Motor Neurone Disease – the same illness that claimed the life of French’s own mother in 2022.

“A couple of years ago I lost my mum to the same thing. With Rob obviously being such a legend, it has connected to me a bit emotionally,” French admitted. “It’s made this week sweet, especially the fact my mum passed away from it.”

French, who was granted extended leave from Wigan to care for his mother in Australia before her passing, acknowledged the deep personal significance of the Challenge Cup triumph, as it mirrored the first trophy he won upon his return to England following his mother’s death.

“The first trophy I won when I came back to England after she passed away was the Challenge Cup, so it makes it even more special, yes,” the elated player expressed.

Wigan’s Challenge Cup success is the latest in a remarkable run of silverware for the Warriors, who have now claimed the Grand Final, League Leaders’ Shield, and World Club Challenge in addition to this latest triumph. French, however, remained humble in the face of the team’s achievements, stating that the enormity of their accomplishments would take time to sink in.

“Not too many teams have gone Grand Final, League Leaders, World Club and then this,” he said. “It was a main focus for us and a bit of motivation. It’s going to take a bit to sink in – all the trophies, so sit back and enjoy it for a few days.”
