Ben Currie Shines in New Loose Forward Role as Warrington Wolves Defeat Leeds Rhinos
In Warrington Wolves’ impressive 34-8 victory over Leeds Rhinos, back-rower Ben Currie delivered a standout “man of the match” performance in the unfamiliar role of loose forward.
Currie, a regular in the back-row, has been deployed at loose forward on multiple occasions this season. And he proved his versatility once again, putting in a dominant display in both attack and defence at Headingley.
The 28-year-old made 14 carries and 26 tackles, as well as providing an assist, to help Warrington secure the convincing win over their Super League rivals. Sky Sports pundit Sam Tomkins praised Currie’s impact, saying:
“The way he moved the ball in the middle, that’s not his normal position, he’s normally a back-rower, but we saw early on in the game he was playing through the middle.”
Tomkins added:
“You don’t always have to be the biggest body to be in the middle and cause problems but I think Ben Currie is the perfect example of that.. The way that he moves the ball to other blokes and just causes issues for defences.”
Despite being without three first-choice forwards, Warrington’s pack delivered a powerful performance, with Currie leading the way. Sky Sports’ Jodie Cunningham highlighted the loose forward’s all-round contribution, saying:
“I think his ball-playing was brilliant, particularly for the Joe Bullock try, but I think defensively as well his work rate was brilliant.”
After the match, Currie expressed his enjoyment of the new role, telling Sky Sports:
“I’ve had a slight positional change over the last few weeks, I’ve moved into the middle so I’ve managed to get my hands on the ball a little bit more and play a few plays, so I’m enjoying it there.”
Warrington’s impressive team performance and Currie’s standout display in the unfamiliar loose forward position are sure to provide a significant boost to the rugby league results and sky sports rugby league coverage in the coming days.
