Schneider Reflects on Successful Stint at Hull KR Ahead of NRL Return
Penrith Panthers recruit Brad Schneider has opened up about his time with Hull KR and his decision to return to the NRL with the reigning champions.
Schneider joined the Robins on a mid-season loan in 2022 and made an immediate impact, playing a crucial role in their run to the Challenge Cup final. Despite Leigh ultimately defeating KR at Wembley, Schneider’s performances were instrumental in the club’s push for the playoffs, where they ultimately fell short against eventual Super League winners Wigan Warriors.
Speaking to the ABC Sport Podcast, the half-back revealed that he had initially intended to stay in the UK for another year, but the opportunity to join the dominant Penrith Panthers was too good to pass up.
“I didn’t really know what I was going to do when I went over. I had intentions of probably staying over there another year, whether it be at Hull KR or another English team,” Schneider said. “But Penrith came to the table pretty early, within the first couple of weeks when I got over there. So, when they sort of came to the table, it was a bit of a no-brainer to come back to Australia.”
Schneider, who grew up watching Hull KR veteran Shaun Kenny-Dowall, also spoke of his admiration for Panthers star Nathan Cleary, stating that the chance to learn from him was a key factor in his decision to return to the NRL.
“And I always wanted to come back to the NRL, and when someone like the Panthers come knocking and get the experience with someone like Nathan (Cleary), and it’s someone you want to learn off it was a bit of a no-brainer.”
While Hull KR fans will be disappointed to see Schneider leave, the Robins are once again in contention for the playoffs and the Challenge Cup. The Robins faithful can only wonder what might have been had they been able to retain the inspirational half-back for the rest of the season.
