The Road to the Mid-Season International Break
The mid-season international break is fast approaching, and England fans are eagerly anticipating Shaun Wane’s squad selection. Earlier this week, a double-header against France was confirmed, providing players with the opportunity to impress and earn a coveted call-up.
Last year, Wane introduced several new faces to the international setup following the World Cup disappointment, with the likes of Ethan Havard, Ash Handley, Matty Ashton, and Tyler Dupree earning their first caps. The Captaincy and Key Positions
The captaincy duties are likely to fall once again on the shoulders of Jack Welsby, who has been one of the standout performers in Super League this year. Welsby’s leadership qualities were evident during the Autumn internationals, and his versatility and game-breaking ability make him an indispensable member of the squad.
On the wings, Tom Johnstone and Ash Handley are poised to stake their claims. Johnstone returned to the international fold last year and was one of England’s better players, while Handley’s scintillating form for Leeds has made him a must-pick.
In the centres, Harry Newman and Jake Wardle are expected to form the midfield pairing. Newman made his England debut in the Tonga series and will be looking to build on that experience, while Wardle’s stellar performances for Wigan make him a strong candidate to earn a starting spot.
The half-back positions could see the continued partnership of Mikey Lewis and Harry Smith. The duo impressed during the opening two games against Tonga, and their solid understanding and enterprising play should give Wane confidence in retaining them.
The Forwards
Up front, Luke Thompson and Matty Lees are likely to lead the charge, while Liam Farrell and Matt Whitley are set to form a formidable second-row combination. In the loose forward role, Morgan Knowles will be eager to stake his claim after missing the latter stages of the Tonga series due to injury.
