Legendary Rugby League Star Barrie McDermott Shares His Ultimate Team
Former Great Britain and Ireland international turned Sky Sports pundit Barrie McDermott has revealed his dream rugby league lineup, featuring some of the best players he had the privilege of sharing the field with throughout his illustrious career.
McDermott, who made over 350 appearances for club and country, enjoyed a distinguished playing career at the highest level. After starting out at his hometown club Oldham, he went on to represent the likes of Wigan and Leeds Rhinos, spending a decade with the latter before ending his career with a season at Widnes in 2006.
On the international stage, the rugged forward earned 15 caps for Great Britain and 13 for Ireland.
In an exclusive interview with Love Rugby League, McDermott shared his ultimate 13, selecting a star-studded lineup of his favorite teammates and opponents.
Backline
At fullback, McDermott opted for the brilliant Iestyn Harris, describing the Welsh wonder as a “game changer” and “maverick player” capable of dictating the course of a match. On the wings, he chose the elusive Jason Robinson and the prolific try-scorer Martin Offiah, two of the most lethal finishers the sport has ever seen.
In the centres, McDermott picked the defensive masterclass of Gary Connolly, alongside the powerful and creative Keith Senior.
At halfback, the former prop forward went for the tactical genius of Kevin Sinfield paired with the electric Rob Burrow, a dynamic duo who orchestrated many a Rhinos triumph.

Up front, McDermott’s front-row pairing consisted of the reliable Terry O’Connor and the crafty Terry Newton, while the back-row featured the rugged Adrian Morley and the all-around brilliance of Paul Sculthorpe. Captaining the side is the legendary Andy Farrell, who McDermott described as the “best player of the Super League era”.
