Rugby League Veteran Carl Forber Retires, Takes Assistant Coach Role at Workington Town

Former St Helens and Leigh playmaker Carl Forber has announced his retirement from professional rugby league, taking on an assistant coaching role at League 1 club Workington Town for the 2025 season.

Forber, now 39 years old, came through the youth ranks at his hometown club St Helens, making his senior debut for the Saints back in 2004. He then spent two seasons with Leigh Leopards after their promotion to Super League in 2005, racking up 30 appearances.

“I’ve had an incredible career, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue my involvement in the sport as an assistant coach.”

The veteran half-back spent the vast majority of his illustrious career with Workington Town, returning to the club in 2012 after brief stints with Blackpool Panthers, Swinton Lions and Oldham. Over his time with Workington, Forber made over 350 appearances and scored more than 2,000 points, cementing his status as a club legend.

Forber has now decided to hang up his boots and take on a new challenge as an assistant coach to Jonty Gorley at Workington Town for the 2025 campaign. With 442 senior career appearances under his belt, the playmaker retires as one of the most experienced and decorated players in the third-tier competition.

Workington Town’s departures list also includes several other notable names, such as Jason Mossop, the brother of former Salford prop Lee Mossop, who is also retiring. The club will be looking to rebuild ahead of the 2025 season after finishing sixth in League 1 in 2024.
