Wigan Warriors Keep Pressure on League Leaders Hull KR with 26-18 Win over Catalans Dragons
In a tight contest at the Stade Gilbert Brutus, Wigan Warriors edged out a 26-18 victory over the Catalans Dragons, keeping the pressure on league leaders Hull Kingston Rovers in the race for the Super League title.
The game was evenly poised at 12-12 at half-time, but Wigan’s strong second-half display allowed them to secure the two points and return home to the DW Stadium with a crucial win.
Wigan’s Junior Nsemba was the standout performer, scoring a try and producing a tireless display with 13 carries and 26 tackles. The 20-year-old back-rower has quickly become a fan favorite at the Warriors, and his man-of-the-match performance showcased his impressive development.
“Junior Nsemba has been a revelation for us this season,” said Wigan head coach Matt Peet. “His work ethic and tenacity are exactly what we need, and he’s only going to keep improving.”
In another positive for the Warriors, young hooker Tom Forber scored his first try for the first team just before the break, leveling the scores and providing a crucial momentum shift in Wigan’s favor.
The return of Bevan French from a hamstring injury was a welcome sight for Wigan fans, though the reigning Man of Steel had a mixed outing as he eased his way back into the action. Nonetheless, the Warriors are a more potent attacking force with the Australian international in their lineup.
Wigan’s Kaide Ellis also reached a career milestone, making his 100th professional appearance, with 74 of those coming in the famous cherry and white jersey.
As for the hosts, the Catalans Dragons find themselves outside the top six for the first time this season and are in danger of missing out on the playoffs. Coach Steve McNamara will be hoping his side can regain their form in the final three games against Salford, London, and Hull FC to secure a postseason berth.
The battle at the top of the Super League table remains intense, with Wigan and Hull KR level on 38 points. Next week’s clash between the two sides at the Bricks Community Stadium could prove pivotal in determining who secures the coveted League Leaders’ Shield.
