Bennison’s Saint Helens Chance: Sky Sports Rugby League Update

Bennison Aims to Seize St Helens Opportunity

Paul Wellens, the St Helens head coach, has expressed his belief that Jon Bennison is poised to make the most of a likely chance to showcase his abilities if selected for the upcoming match against Huddersfield. Wellens has also left the door open for the winger to secure a new contract with the club.

Bennison is one of several players in the Saints’ backline who are out of contract later this season, including overseas centre duo Konrad Hurrell and Waqa Blake. Despite limited game time in recent months, Bennison’s opportunity may come this weekend, with Tommy Makinson’s suspension potentially opening the door.

“There’s not many in positions where they’re unsure of the situation,” he said. “What I need to do between and now and the end of the year is have conversations with some players around recruitment, where we want to go.”

The Saints coach praised Bennison’s attitude and performance in the reserves, stating, “Jon’s outstanding – he’s a player everyone loves and respects. It’s been a tough few weeks for Jon and he’s been disappointed to not get an opportunity, but he trains brilliantly and his standard levels have never waned one bit. He’s shown he’s too good for that level (reserves) and he certainly comes back into contention this week.

With the arrivals of Tristan Sailor and Kyle Feldt, at least one of Hurrell and Blake will have to depart the club at the end of the season. Wellens confirmed that discussions with the overseas centres are “ongoing” and reiterated his desire to retain forward Sione Mata’utia, though he acknowledged the player’s wish to return to Australia.
