Wigan Warriors Hooker O’Neill and St Helens’ Mbye to Miss Derby Clash
(May 9, 2023 – Sky Sports) In a setback for both teams, Wigan Warriors hooker Brad O’Neill and his St Helens counterpart Moses Mbye have been handed one-match suspensions and will miss Friday’s highly anticipated derby clash.
The latest round of Super League fixtures saw three players facing disciplinary action, with O’Neill and Mbye among them. Warrington Wolves forward James Harrison has also been suspended.
O’Neill was charged with a Grade B Dangerous Throw offense, resulting in an automatic one-match ban that will keep him out of the Friday night fixture against St Helens. Similarly, Saints’ Mbye was banned after being charged with a Grade B Dangerous Contact offense.
Harrison is the third player to receive a suspension, facing a Grade B Dangerous Contact charge following Warrington’s victory over Huddersfield last Friday.
All three players have the option to appeal their respective bans, with a decision expected by 12pm on Tuesday.
The absence of both O’Neill and Mbye represents a significant blow for the two clubs heading into the highly anticipated derby. Ordinarily, Kruise Leeming would have stepped up from the Wigan bench to start in place of O’Neill, but he is currently sidelined due to injury.
St Helens will be hoping that Daryl Clark is available after missing last Friday’s defeat against Castleford Tigers; if not, the club could face a crisis at the hooker position.
Additionally, Wigan’s Mike Cooper and Luke Thompson, Leigh’s Robbie Mulhern and John Asiata, and Hull’s Yusuf Aydin were also charged but received only £250 fines.
