Leeds Rhinos: Chev Walker Embraces Interim Role, Focused on Transition
Leeds Rhinos are continuing their search for a new head coach following Rohan Smith’s recent departure from the Super League club. In the meantime, assistant coach Chev Walker has been entrusted with the interim charge, though he insists he has no timeline over the duration of his temporary role.
Speaking to reporters, Walker acknowledged that the timing is “not right” for him to consider the top job on a permanent basis, as he feels he is still in the early stages of his coaching career. “At some point, yeah. The time is not right now, I’m not thinking about that,” he said when asked about his aspirations to become a head coach.
With the likes of Paul Rowley and Brad Arthur rumored to be in contention for the Rhinos’ vacant position, Walker and fellow assistant Scott Grix will lead the team in their upcoming clash against London Broncos on Saturday afternoon.
Walker stressed that his focus remains on ensuring the players are in the best possible shape for the incoming head coach, whenever that decision is made. “My main message to the group is that we’re aiming to be in a good spot for whoever comes in, whenever they come in,” he explained.
The interim coach also revealed that he has not been informed of the timeline for the Rhinos’ head coach appointment, nor has he been actively involved in the selection process. “It’s a distraction for me as a coach. Ian [Blease, Rhinos’ sporting director] has asked us to focus on what our role is in this period and he’ll keep us up to date on when that happens,” Walker said.
As Leeds Rhinos continue their search for a new leader, Chev Walker’s priority is to guide the team through this transition period and set them up for success, regardless of who ultimately takes the helm on a full-time basis.
