NRL Forward Jack de Belin Courted by Surprise Super League Suitor
According to reports, NRL forward Jack de Belin has attracted interest from several Super League clubs this year. The 33-year-old, who is currently only contracted with the St George Illawarra Dragons until the end of the 2023 season, can play as a loose-forward or a prop.
ABC has reported that de Belin hopes to remain with the Dragons, the only club he has played for in his career. However, with no renewal talks apparently underway, the former State of Origin representative may need to explore options elsewhere if he wishes to continue his playing days.
When asked about a potential move to Super League, de Belin acknowledged it as a possibility, noting the short nature of rugby league careers and the need to maximize earnings. “It is a lot, it’s a massive move,” he said.
Surprise Suitors Emerge
The Leigh Leopards have been particularly linked with de Belin’s services, but the player has also received offers from other unnamed Super League clubs. Interestingly, the South Sydney Rabbitohs have also emerged as a surprise suitor, according to Wide World of Sports.
Souths were reportedly interested earlier in the year before cooling their pursuit due to salary cap concerns. Now, the iconic NRL club seems to have reignited their interest in signing the Papua New Guinea international, who has over 200 NRL appearances to his name.
If de Belin does decide to make the move to the UK, he would command a significant contract, with his current deal said to be worth close to the equivalent of £400,000. Such a high-profile acquisition would be a significant statement of intent for any Super League club.
