Super League Club Approaches Bradford Bulls Coach Eamon O’Carroll
(The Telegraph and Argus, 15 March 2023) – Bradford Bulls CEO Jason Hirst has confirmed that their head coach, Eamon O’Carroll, was recently approached by a Super League club. O’Carroll, a former Ireland international, began his playing career at Wigan Warriors before moving to Hull FC and Widnes Vikings. He has Super League coaching experience as an assistant with Widnes and Catalans Dragons.
O’Carroll took on his first head coach role from 2020 to 2022 with Newcastle Thunder, and joined the Bulls on a three-year deal ahead of the current season. Currently, Bradford sit fourth in the RFL Championship, level on points with third-placed Toulouse Olympique. O’Carroll’s positive start at Odsal Stadium earned him a further one-year contract extension last month, a testament to the club’s faith in his ability to lead them forward.
“Eamon had an approach for Super League a few weeks ago, which wasn’t from Salford as reported by some,” Hirst said. “But we had no doubt he’d turn it down because he wants to write his name into this club’s folklore, and I believe he’ll do that during his contract (until at least the end of 2027) here.”
Given the timing and Bradford’s current coaching situation, the approach was likely from Leeds Rhinos, who are currently without a head coach. However, it’s also possible the offer was for an assistant coach role, similar to how O’Carroll began his coaching career.
