Rugby League: Wellens Calls for Stronger Leadership to Drive Game Forward
St Helens head coach Paul Wellens has emphasized the need for those running international rugby league to take a firm grip on the game and steer it in a positive direction, stating that this is crucial for the sport’s growth.
Wellens, who has represented England both as a player and a coach, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding the state of the international game. He believes there must be a constructive discussion about how to revive the international game and address the recent underwhelming performances, such as England’s victory in France on Saturday.
“England rugby league want international fixtures and they want to play big international fixtures,” Wellens said. “It’s something for the international board to get a grip of and move it forwards. Having been involved in the setup for a number of years as a player and a coach, I know the appetite is there for big games.”
Wellens also expressed his frustration at the fact that England have not faced the reigning world champions, Australia, for nearly seven years, describing the situation as “frankly ridiculous.” He emphasized that rugby league fans want to see high-profile matches, such as the Ashes series and clashes with New Zealand, and urged the governing bodies to prioritize these fixtures in the calendar.
