Rugby League: Welsby Excited to See England Debutants Shine
At just 23 years old, Jack Welsby is already considered a veteran in the England rugby league squad, having earned nine international caps. As the team prepares to face France in Toulouse this weekend, Welsby’s experience will be crucial, especially with six debutants joining the squad.
Welsby, who has only tasted defeat once in an England shirt, is eager to help the team build towards the upcoming Ashes series in 2025 and the 2026 World Cup. The upcoming match against France presents an important opportunity for head coach Shaun Wane to assess the depth of his squad, and Welsby is excited to see some of his teammates make their mark.
In a recent interview, Welsby singled out two players he is particularly excited to see in action. The first is his St Helens teammate, George Delaney, who Welsby believes deserves his chance in the national team.
“Well, my obvious one is George Delaney. I want to see how he goes. He deserves his call-up. He’s someone that I knew Waney would like as soon as I seen him play. He’s tough. He goes hard, doesn’t he?”
Welsby also highlighted the impressive form of Hull KR’s Elliot Minchella, who he believes has been knocking on the door of the England squad for some time.
“Other than George, I think Elliot Minchella probably deserves a shout. I think he’s been knocking on the door. I think with people like Victor Radley and Morgan Knowles, it’s obviously going to be hard for him to get in consistently but I think he deserves his chance.”
As England seek to avenge their heartbreaking semi-final defeat against Samoa in the last Rugby League World Cup, the upcoming fixtures against France and the historic test series against Samoa this autumn will be crucial in shaping the team’s preparations for the future.
