Rugby League Disciplinary Saga: A Loophole Exposed
The Round 15 Super League disciplinary findings have been confirmed, with five players across the competition facing bans. However, only one of these players will miss an actual Super League game, thanks to a loophole in the system.
The exploitative loophole allows Super League sides to select players for Reserve team fixtures, effectively avoiding bans for the first team. Four out of the five players banned represent three different clubs, all of which have Reserve team fixtures this weekend. As a result, Emmanuel Waine (London Broncos), Sione Mata’utia (St Helens), and Elliot Wallis (Huddersfield Giants) will likely serve their one-match bans in the Reserve team games.

While the clubs are within their rights to utilize the existing rules, the practice of avoiding bans for first-team matches raises questions about the fairness and integrity of the competition.”
On the other hand, the two players banned from Catalans Dragons, Michael McIlorum and Arthur Romano, will have to serve their bans as the club does not have a Reserve team fixture. This means that French centre Romano will likely miss the international match against England in Toulouse on Saturday.
