Leigh Leopards Face Uphill Battle for Top Six Spot Despite Coach’s Optimism
Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam has refused to rule out the possibility of his team making the top six, despite the significant setback suffered from their recent defeat against Leeds Rhinos. The Leopards’ terrible start to the season, winning just one of their opening seven games, has made their path to the playoffs much more challenging, with the team needing to win nine of their remaining fourteen matches to have a realistic chance.
The 18-10 loss against Leeds has further complicated matters, as the “magic mark” of 28 points now appears unlikely given the tough fixtures Lam’s side has to face. Adding to the difficulty, the Leopards will have to play three games in ten days in early August to accommodate the rescheduled match against Wigan Warriors.
“When asked about the prospects of making the top six after the defeat to Leeds, Lam refused to rule anything out, stating that he is trying to focus on a ‘week-to-week basis’ rather than looking too far ahead.”
The coach explained that the team’s upcoming run of six consecutive away games, followed by the majority of their remaining fixtures being at home, still provides some hope for the Leopards. Lam is also looking forward to the possibility of having a full squad available after the international break, with several key players, including Asiata, Mulhern, Gaz O’Brien, and Ollie Holmes, expected to return. He noted that Tom Amone had failed his HIA but should be fit for the Wigan Warriors clash.
Despite the significant challenges facing the Leigh Leopards, their head coach remains optimistic about the team’s chances of making the top six, emphasizing the importance of taking things one week at a time and capitalizing on the return of their injured players.
