Rugby League: England Coach Shaun Wane Cautious About June Test Against France
England head coach Shaun Wane is approaching the upcoming international fixture against France later this month with a measured approach. On June 29th, the England men’s and women’s teams will face off against France in a double-header at the Stade Ernest-Wallon in Toulouse, marking 90 years of rugby league in the country.
In a recent press conference, Wane hinted at the composition of his men’s team selection, stating, “I’ve got an idea of who I want to pick but there could be injuries and I’m not going to go into the French game with people who can’t train. I want a fully fit squad.” The coach emphasized his desire to field a blend of experienced players he trusts, along with younger talents who can contribute to England’s Ashes and World Cup campaigns in the years ahead.
Wane acknowledged the absence of several key players, including Mike McMeeken, Morgan Knowles, and Alex Walmsley, due to injury. This could open the door for promising youngsters such as Junior Nsemba and Matty Nicholson to earn their international debuts.
“The players who played against Tonga for me played really well. I trust they will have a really good chance of playing against the French and also some young players who are going to play hopefully in the Ashes and the World Cup as well,” Wane said, hinting at a balanced approach that combines experienced heads with fresh talent.
Despite the cautious tone, Wane is determined to field a competitive team against France, with an eye towards the long-term goals of the Ashes series in 2025 and the 2024 Rugby League World Cup. The coach emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for young players to gain valuable international experience.
