Eventful Disciplinary Round for Super League as Savelio Avoids Ban
The latest round of Super League disciplinary actions has been announced, with a total of four charges and two bans handed out following Round Fourteen’s fixtures. However, one high-profile player managed to escape any further punishment despite being red-carded in his long-awaited debut.
Huddersfield Giants’ new signing Andre Savelio made his first appearance for the club after joining from Hull FC, but the occasion was marred by his dismissal in the 70th minute of their 32-6 defeat against Hull KR. Despite Savelio’s sending off, the Match Review Panel has determined that no additional sanctions will be imposed.
According to Huddersfield head coach Ian Watson, the incident involving Savelio and Hull KR’s Elliot Minchella prompted a reaction from Mikey Lewis, who allegedly “came in” and was “flipped” by the Giants forward. However, the disciplinary process concluded that Savelio’s actions were warranted, with the MRP stating the “opponent confronts player who is off balance and opponent ends up in a dangerous position, sending off sufficient.”
While Savelio avoided a ban, two London Broncos players – Rhys Kennedy and Ethan Natoli – were not as fortunate, each receiving a one-match suspension for dangerous contact charges. Castleford Tigers’ Cain Robb and Jacob Miller, on the other hand, were handed £250 fines for head contact offenses.
Despite the disciplinary outcomes, the focus remains on Savelio’s dramatic debut and Watson’s assessment that the final score “didn’t reflect the game.” As the Super League season continues, fans and teams alike will be keeping a close eye on the ongoing disciplinary proceedings and their impact on the competition.
