Rugby League Rebuild: Hull FC Urged to Bolster Youth Development Alongside Veteran Signings
In a revealing analysis ahead of Hull FC’s victory over Leeds Rhinos, former boss Tony Smith has questioned the club’s recruitment strategy under Richie Myler‘s leadership. Smith, who was relieved of his duties at the club earlier this season, has suggested that Hull FC’s aggressive pursuit of experienced players may come at the expense of nurturing their promising academy talents.
Citing the club’s recent confirmed signings, such as Tom Briscoe, Jed Cartwright and Yusuf Aydin, Smith highlighted that many of these players are “older” – a potential indication that Hull FC has not invested enough in developing its youth pipeline. This comes despite the club’s efforts to re-sign several exciting prospects, including Logan Moy, Nick Staveley, Lewis Martin, Harvey Barron and Jack Charles.
Balancing Veteran Signings and Youth Development
Smith’s critique echoes a point made by pundit Jon Wilkin, who suggested that Hull FC has struggled to attract the right overseas talent to complement their young stars. The former Hull KR boss recalled his own experience of transforming the fortunes of his former club by bringing in Shaun Kenny-Dowall “on the cheap” – a strategy Hull FC is yet to replicate with similar success.
“Sometimes it’s a case of you have to take risks,” Smith said. “You’re not getting the players that you sometimes need.”
With the club’s recent overseas recruits, such as Franklin Pele, Jayden Okunbor, Nu Brown and Tex Hoy, either leaving on loan or being released, Smith and Wilkin have highlighted the need for Hull FC to strike the right balance between proven talent and nurturing homegrown prospects.
The Challenge Ahead
As the club prepares for the upcoming season under new head coach John Cartwright, the challenge will be to ensure a more “connected” approach that seamlessly integrates the academy system with the first-team squad – a strategy that Smith believes is crucial for sustained success.
