After a tumultuous start to the 2024 season, Hull FC finally secured their first victory under interim head coach Simon Grix, defeating the Leeds Rhinos 18-10 in a hard-fought Super League clash.
The Black and Whites have endured a challenging campaign thus far, parting ways with former head coach Tony Smith in April after just one win from their opening fixtures. Grix, Smith’s former assistant, soon found himself thrust into the top job, inheriting a team mired in an 11-game losing streak.
However, Grix’s tenure has shown signs of promise, with the consensus being that his side has trended towards improvement despite the results. That trend finally culminated in a much-needed victory over the Rhinos, courtesy of tries from Lewis Martin, Denive Balmforth, and Cameron Scott.
“If you want security, go work at Tesco,” Grix recalled Smith telling him when he was considering a move into coaching.
With the playoffs likely out of reach, Grix believes his players are now auditioning for their futures at the club, with a significant amount of change expected in the offseason. “The challenge has been laid down to the boys that, you know, hopefully there’s a brighter future coming here at Hull,” Grix said. “And do you want to be part of it?”
While the performance was far from perfect, Grix remains optimistic that the team can build on this victory and continue to improve week-to-week, focusing on the little details that will help them be competitive in every game.
