Rugby League News: Liam Marshall Impresses as Wigan Warriors Edge Castleford Tigers
Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has hailed winger Liam Marshall’s impressive form this season, suggesting the in-form star should be in contention for an England call-up. However, Peet acknowledges the stiff competition Marshall faces for a spot in Shaun Wane’s national side.
Marshall, the current top try scorer in Super League with 15 tries in 12 matches, has been a consistent performer for the Warriors since his debut in 2017. Despite his stellar club form, the winger is yet to earn his first international cap, but that could be about to change.
“Liam has been in the mix before and he’s in good form; but there’s some good wingers in Super League and there’s a few you could mention who would be in the mix,” said Peet after Wigan’s narrow 10-8 victory over Castleford Tigers.
The Wigan coach praised Marshall’s all-round contributions, highlighting his ability to score tries, work hard in defence, and chase kicks effectively – attributes that make him a valuable asset in the modern game.
While Peet refrained from directly advising England coach Wane, he expressed his delight with Marshall’s performances, particularly in Wigan’s hard-fought win over Castleford. The Warriors had to dig deep to secure the two points, with Marshall’s try and a Harry Smith penalty goal proving decisive in the final quarter.
Peet acknowledged Castleford’s strong showing, stating that the visitors were “motivated and energised” and provided a stern challenge for the defending champions. The coach stressed that Wigan’s recent Challenge Cup triumph did not factor into their performance, and praised the team’s character for getting the job done.
With Jai Field currently out of action, Wigan’s backline was disrupted, with Bevan French shifting to fullback and Ryan Hampshire coming into the halves alongside Harry Smith. Peet recognised the need for the new combination to gel, but expressed confidence that they would improve with more time on the training ground.
As Wigan prepare to face bottom-placed London Broncos next weekend, they will be hoping for a more dominant display, but Peet’s focus remains on helping his players develop their connections and continue their push for success.
