Salford Red Devils Provide Pathway for Homegrown Talent with Nathan Connell’s Super League Debut
In a heartwarming story of perseverance and belief, Salford Red Devils head coach Paul Rowley recently had the privilege of handing a Super League debut to academy product Nathan Connell. The 21-year-old fullback/winger’s journey to the top has been far from conventional, but his unwavering determination has ultimately paid off.

Connell, who has never been part of a scholarship system, has come through the Salford development academy in recent years while also working within the club’s foundation. It was only earlier this season that he experienced a full-time professional environment for the first time, making his Super League bow earlier this month a truly remarkable achievement.
Rowley, clearly impressed with Connell’s resilience and potential, expressed his delight at giving the youngster his first-team debut. “It’s a pathway in which I don’t think there’s a lot of success stories in and around that. Luis Roberts at Leeds is another who has come through that pathway as well, so I think they are few and far between who have taken that route,” the Salford coach told Love Rugby League.
Connell’s Impressive Debut Performance
Connell’s impressive 20-minute cameo in Salford’s 34-4 victory over London Broncos showcased his eagerness and ability, with Rowley praising the debutant’s immediate impact. “He wanted a carry straight away and he got stuck in straight away so I’m delighted for him,” the coach remarked.
Salford’s Elite Academy Ambitions
With Salford securing an Elite Academy Licence from 2025, Rowley is hopeful that the club will be able to reward more homegrown talent like Connell with opportunities at the highest level in the years to come. “It will take a while to get a system implemented that we feel works for the club and some cycles of players coming through and then out of the other side, that’s years not months,” he acknowledged. “But there’s got to be a starting point and this is good obviously.”
