Wigan Warriors Full-back Jai Field Set to Miss Weeks of Action Due to Hamstring Injury
Wigan Warriors’ star full-back Jai Field is expected to be sidelined for several weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury during the team’s recent Challenge Cup final triumph, head coach Matt Peet has confirmed.
Field has been omitted from Wigan’s 21-man squad for Friday’s Round 14 clash against Castleford Tigers as Super League action resumes. This marks the second time this season that Peet has rested the Australian player, with the coach acknowledging that Field has been managing a minor muscle issue throughout the campaign.
However, this latest absence is a result of an enforced injury, and it appears the Warriors may have to do without one of their key players for an extended period.
Field played the full 80 minutes at Wembley last Saturday as Wigan defeated Warrington Wolves 18-8 to clinch their second Challenge Cup title under Peet’s tenure. But the coach revealed that the 25-year-old had to push through the pain barrier after sustaining the hamstring problem early in the match.
“Jai’s pulled his hamstring, he pulled his hamstring very early on in that game,” Peet explained during his pre-Castleford press conference on Wednesday. “We were aware of it, and we know just how brave he played during that game – he played through the pain barrier.”
Peet further noted that Field has undergone a scan, and the club is awaiting additional medical opinions, but the player is expected to be sidelined for “a few weeks, at least.”
This is not the first time Field has had to deal with a hamstring injury. He was previously out for five months at the start of his Wigan Warriors career, having sustained a similar problem on his debut in March 2021 against the Leigh Leopards, not returning until August of that year.
