Wigan Warriors Head Coach Believes Team is Just Getting Started
Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet insists his side is “still at the start” of a potential period of dominance in British rugby league. The Warriors’ recent Challenge Cup victory over Warrington Wolves means they now hold all four major trophies available to Super League clubs – the League Leaders’ Shield, Grand Final, World Club Challenge, and Challenge Cup.
Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Peet expressed his belief that this Wigan team has the potential to become something truly special.
“It’s a very, very young team, there are a lot of players just signed in for long-term deals. We’ve got an inexperienced coaching staff, including myself, so we’re very, very far from being satisfied,” he said.
Peet acknowledged the challenges of the salary cap era, with fierce competition from overseas contracts, but feels his squad has the right balance of young talent and experienced internationals who are “massively invested in the club.”
Forward Liam Farrell echoed Peet’s sentiments, suggesting this Wigan Warriors side could go down as an “iconic team” in Super League history.
“A lot of build-up was made about how only two teams have done it in the past, and obviously us being the third now,” Farrell said on BBC Radio Manchester. “So I think it puts us in a position where we’re going to go down as maybe quite an iconic team when it comes to Super League teams.”
The Warriors’ unprecedented quadruple trophy haul in a single season has only been achieved twice before in the Super League era – by the Bradford Bulls in 2003-04 and St Helens in 2006-07.
