Warrington Wolves Suffer Crushing Challenge Cup Final Defeat, Marred by Injury Woes
Warrington Wolves’ Challenge Cup final heartbreak was compounded by the potential loss of Lachlan Fitzgibbon to injury, confirmed head coach Sam Burgess.
Contrary to his impressive performances since joining the Wire in the offseason, the Australian powerhouse Fitzgibbon, along with his teammates, struggled to find their rhythm at Wembley. Fitzgibbon was withdrawn at half-time, failing to return to the field after Warrington found themselves trailing Wigan Warriors 12-2 at the break.
In a disappointing final outing, Wigan’s dominance was reflected in the 18-8 scoreline, despite a late consolation try from Warrington’s Matt Dufty.
“He’ll probably need a break,” the coach stated, addressing Fitzgibbon’s injury woes.
Warrington’s injury troubles were not limited to Fitzgibbon, as another forward, Jody Crowther, also had to be withdrawn with a leg issue in the second half. Burgess remained uncertain about the severity of Crowther’s injury, noting, “I don’t think it’s too bad, but he couldn’t get back on the field.”
As Warrington Wolves return to Super League action, they will need to regroup and address these injury concerns, with a home fixture against Salford Red Devils up next on June 14.
