Super League Attendance Highlights: The Best-Attended Games of 2024 So Far
Despite concerns over the league’s decline, Super League continues to attract impressive attendances, particularly for the big-ticket matchups. BBC Sport has ranked the top five best-attended Super League games in the 2024 season thus far.
5. Leeds Rhinos 22-16 Salford Red Devils (15,126)
The consistently well-supported Leeds Rhinos welcomed Salford Red Devils in Round 1, drawing over 15,000 fans to Headingley. While not a traditional rivalry, the match was a tight affair, ultimately decided by a late try from Sam Lisone. The highlight was undoubtedly Ash Handley’s spectacular length-of-the-field try, which went on to win Try of the Month for February.
4. Leeds Rhinos 8-18 St Helens (15,284)
Back at Headingley, this time St Helens emerged victorious over the Rhinos despite losing Tommy Makinson to injury before the game. St Helens rallied from an early deficit, with tries from Waqa Blake, Jon Bennison, and Moses Mbye securing the win. This was the first of three meetings between the sides, with St Helens going on to comprehensively beat Leeds in subsequent fixtures.
3. Wigan Warriors 30-16 Huddersfield Giants (15,357)
Wigan Warriors’ first home game of the season attracted over 15,000 fans to welcome the Huddersfield Giants. Fresh off their World Club Challenge triumph, the Warriors raced to an early 18-0 lead and, despite a fightback from the Giants, secured a comfortable victory.
2. St Helens 12-4 Wigan Warriors (17,980)
The fiercely contested ‘Derby’ between St Helens and Wigan Warriors saw a crowd of almost 18,000 fans. In a tight affair, St Helens came from behind to claim the victory, with late tries from Tommy Makinson and Konrad Hurrell securing the bragging rights. The return fixture in Wigan is sure to draw another impressive attendance.
1. Hull FC 0-22 Hull KR (20,014)
The standout attendance of the 2024 Super League season so far was the Hull Derby, the first game of the campaign. Over 20,000 fans packed the MKM Stadium to witness Hull KR secure a convincing win over their city rivals. The result set the tone for a difficult season for Hull FC, whose home games have since averaged around 10,000 attendees.
