The 20-year-old half-back, who made his Super League debut in 2022, has flourished in the early stages of the 2024 rugby league season. Despite Warrington Wolves coach Sam Burgess’ initial plan to ease Hayes into first-team action, injuries to key players George Williams and Josh Drinkwater have seen the young playmaker thrust into the spotlight earlier than expected.
Burgess, speaking to Love Rugby League, has been full of praise for Hayes’ performances, highlighting the maturity and composure the youngster has displayed on the pitch. “I can’t speak of him more glowingly,” the Warrington boss said. “He’s a good lad, he works hard, and he cares about his role, so he’s doing really well.”
The Warrington-born talent, who honed his skills at local community clubs Rylands Sharks and Bank Quay Bulls, has showcased an impressive kicking game and the ability to guide his side around the park, belying his tender years. Burgess has been particularly impressed with the way Hayes has handled the increased pressure, stating that “not one part of it has bothered him.”
