Warrington Wolves Captain George Williams Suspended for Top-of-the-Table Clash Against Wigan Warriors
In a significant development, Warrington Wolves captain George Williams has been handed a one-match suspension by the RFL’s Match Review Panel, ruling him out of their crucial top-of-the-table showdown with Wigan Warriors this Saturday.
Williams was charged with a Grade B Dangerous Contact offense during Warrington’s victory over the Catalans Dragons last Saturday. The higher-end grading of the charge means that instead of a £250 fine, the England captain will now miss the highly anticipated clash between the two league leaders.
The Wolves have until Tuesday noon to decide whether to appeal the decision, but with the Challenge Cup final just a week away, any unsuccessful appeal could jeopardize Williams’ chances of featuring at Wembley.
In other disciplinary news from the previous round, six players were charged with Grade B offenses by the Match Review Panel. Leigh Leopards’ Frankie Halton and Brad Dwyer received Dangerous Contact and Tripping charges respectively, but were only fined £250 and avoided suspensions.
Castleford Tigers’ George Griffin and London Broncos’ Will Lovell were also fined £250 for Dangerous Contact charges, while Leeds Rhinos’ Luis Roberts was charged with a similar Grade B offense and received the same outcome.
Additionally, the RFL confirmed on Monday that Hull FC prop Herman Ese’ese will no longer face a tribunal after a charge of verbal abuse against the forward was “unequivocally withdrawn”. Ese’ese was initially facing a potential lengthy ban, but has now been cleared and will not attend the scheduled hearing.
