In a significant move, the Melbourne Storm have granted an immediate release to their forward Aaron Pene, allowing the 28-year-old to pursue a career opportunity in the Super League. While the specific destination remains unconfirmed, the Storm have emphasized that this decision was made to facilitate Pene’s transition to the northern hemisphere competition.
Pene, who first joined the Storm in 2020, had a brief one-year stint with the New Zealand Warriors before returning to Melbourne in 2023. However, over the past two seasons, he has primarily featured for Queensland Cup sides, making just eight appearances for the Storm.
“While reluctant to release Aaron at this stage of the season, this was too good an opportunity for him to pass up,” Ponissi stated. “He will always be a member of our 2020 Premiership squad, when we relocated to Queensland through the trying COVID period. We know Aaron will add great value to his new club and wish him all the best for the future.”
Pene, who has been linked with a move to the Super League for some time, echoed his gratitude towards the Storm organization.
“I’ve loved every minute of my time at this club. Every person at some point through my time here has had a positive impact on my football career and in my life outside,” he said. “It’s never easy leaving a place you love and call home. I’m truly grateful to everyone here and will miss them all – from friends and work colleagues to family.”
The release of Aaron Pene presents an exciting opportunity for the forward to showcase his talents on the Super League stage, while the Melbourne Storm bid farewell to a player who was part of their 2020 Premiership-winning squad.
