Rugby League Club Halifax Panthers Provide Update on Stadium Situation
The Halifax Panthers board has addressed the ongoing situation surrounding The Shay stadium, providing clarity on the club’s stadium status and rent arrears.
Stadium Situation
In January, there were concerns that the Panthers could lose the stadium due to the local council’s efforts to reduce costs by potentially disposing of the facility. Further issues have since emerged, with reports that the club was behind on their rent payments.
The club’s chairman, CEO, and directors, along with coach Liam Finn, addressed these matters during a recent fan forum. The club confirmed that they are in discussion with the council and FC Halifax Town, the local football club, regarding the potential acquisition of the stadium, describing it as a “game-changer for both clubs.”
The club emphasized that “due diligence is still ongoing for all parties” and that no firm plans can be submitted until the process is complete. They stated that the next meeting with the council is scheduled for early June, with a follow-up meeting planned for later.
Rent Arrears
Regarding the rent arrears, the club denied the “incorrectly interpreted headlines” and explained that “historical decisions” led to rent payments being “backed up alongside lots of other obligations.” They have since agreed on a payment plan with Calderdale Council, which includes paying the existing rent and additional amounts to clear the arrears.
Financial Challenges
The club acknowledged the financial challenges faced by rugby league, noting that they only received £100,000 in distribution money last year, compared to the £140,000 they had expected and the £750,000 they earned during the era of the Middle 8s. In contrast, Super League sides are awarded around £1.5 million in central funding, leaving a significant gap that contributed to the financial struggles of London Broncos this season.
Despite these challenges, the Halifax Panthers remain optimistic about their stadium situation and are actively working with the local authorities to secure a positive outcome for the club and its supporters.
