Wigan Warriors Head Coach Matt Peet Confirms No Appeal for Liam Byrne’s Suspension, Prop to Miss Challenge Cup Semi-final
Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has confirmed that the club will not appeal Liam Byrne’s suspension, meaning the prop will miss Saturday’s Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull KR.
Ireland international Byrne was sin-binned in the opening minute of Wigan’s win over Huddersfield Giants last Saturday, penalized for a high shot on Matty English. The Match Review Panel subsequently hit him with a one-game ban on Monday afternoon.
“We’ve got to be better there and continue to work with Liam on his technique,” Peet said at Monday’s press conference.
This is the second time this season that Byrne has received a suspension, having recently returned from a four-game ban for a high tackle on Mark Percival during Wigan’s Good Friday defeat against St Helens.
While Byrne’s absence didn’t prove costly in the Huddersfield game, with the Warriors cruising to a 48-6 victory, coach Peet acknowledged the need to work on the player’s technique to avoid further disciplinary issues.
The Warriors will now have to explore their options as they prepare to take on Hull KR in a rematch of last year’s dramatic Challenge Cup semi-final, where the Robins prevailed in Golden Point extra time. Wigan will be seeking their first trip to Wembley since 2017 and a record-extending 21st Challenge Cup triumph.
