Rugby League: Hull FC Interim Coach Simon Grix Reacts to Embarrassing Defeat Against London Broncos
In a disappointing turn of events, Hull FC interim head coach Simon Grix has expressed his frustration following his team’s embarrassing 34-18 defeat against London Broncos. Despite taking an early lead of 18-16 in the second half, Hull FC ultimately succumbed to a powerful performance by the Broncos, who scored 18 unanswered points to secure their first Super League victory of the season.
Grix, who is vying for the permanent head coach position, did not mince his words in assessing his side’s display. “It doesn’t feel great,” he said. “They deserved it and I thought they were really good. They showed what we were lacking. It was scrappy but they had some endeavour, spirit and fight about them.”
The interim coach acknowledged that his players lacked the necessary toughness and determination to claw their way back into the game. “We were not tough enough and we didn’t have that fight to claw our way back,” he lamented. “If you don’t have the fight and desire to make your tackles and to be desperate when you need to be then rugby league has an uncanny knack of finding you out.”
“If you don’t have the fight and desire to make your tackles and to be desperate when you need to be then rugby league has an uncanny knack of finding you out.”
The ninth consecutive defeat and 14th loss in 16 games, including the end of last season, have left Hull FC languishing at the bottom of the Super League table, level on points with their opponents but separated only by points difference.
For the Broncos, this victory was a significant milestone. With the lowest budget in the league, their ability to overcome Hull FC should not be underestimated. Inspired by the halves combination of James Meadows and Oliver Leyland, the Broncos played some impressive rugby and were deserved winners on the day.
Head coach Mike Eccles was delighted with the result, saying, “To get that done was huge. It’s a massive win for the club. That was a real London Broncos performance today. I thought we moved the ball and we did what we had to do. I had every confidence in them to do that (produce a performance and win).”
As Hull FC continue to struggle, the pressure mounts on Grix to turn the team’s fortunes around. The fans are now calling for a new head coach to be appointed immediately, hoping that a fresh approach can help the club start to move forward.
