Super League’s Golden Point Thrillers Continue in 2024
The 2024 Super League season kicked off with an enthralling Golden Point encounter between the Leigh Leopards and Castleford Tigers. Despite a 10-point lead for Leigh, the Tigers mounted a spirited comeback, with Louis Senior’s last-minute converted try leveling the scores at 28-28 and sending the game into extra time.
The Golden Point period saw both teams attempt multiple drop goal efforts, but the Leopards and Tigers were ultimately unable to be separated, resulting in a rare Super League draw after the additional 10 minutes. This marked the third such draw since the Golden Point rule was introduced in 2019, as the league continues to deliver high-drama spectacles for fans.
The Rise of Golden Point in Super League
Over the past five seasons, Super League has embraced the Golden Point system, with teams battling it out beyond the 80-minute mark in a bid to secure victory. A total of 31 games have now required the extra time period, producing numerous nail-biting finishes and historic moments.
“From Marc Sneyd’s first-ever winning drop goal for Hull FC against Wigan Warriors in 2019 to Salford Red Devils’ surprise try-scoring victory over Warrington Wolves in 2023, the Golden Point rule has undoubtedly added an extra level of excitement to the league.”
As the 2024 campaign gets underway, it seems the thrills and spills of Super League’s extended finishes show no signs of abating.
