Rugby League Roundup: Momentum Shifts in the British Game
Each week this season, Love Rugby League has been bringing you our Power Rankings, showcasing the top 10 clubs in the British game that we believe have the most momentum behind them. The 35 clubs across Super League, the Championship, and League 1 are all in the running, with solely on-field performance affecting the rankings.
Our latest top 10 of the campaign is now revealed, with all competitive games to this point taken into account. For Super League clubs, that includes their performances across the opening 10 rounds and the Challenge Cup. Meanwhile, the Championship and League 1 seasons got underway in March, and clubs in those divisions had already played games in the 1895 Cup and Challenge Cup this year prior to that as well.
10. St Helens (DOWN 3)
Paul Wellens’ side have dropped down three places in our Power Rankings this week following their 40-20 defeat to Hull KR at Craven Park. While still sitting third in the Super League table, having won seven from 10 games, the loss and their exit from the Challenge Cup have seen them lose some momentum.
9. Warrington Wolves (NEW)
It has been a good start to the Sam Burgess era, with the Wolves sitting second in the Super League table, having won seven from 10 in the league. Their recent 24-6 victory over Hull FC has seen them return to our top 10.
8. Salford Red Devils (NEW)
The Red Devils continue to rise under the tutelage of head coach Paul Rowley, winning their last three games, including an 18-16 victory at Huddersfield. The feel-good factor has been further boosted by their star man Marc Sneyd leading the way in the Steve Prescott Man of Steel rankings.
7. Keighley Cougars (DOWN 5)
Matt Foster’s side have fallen five places in our Power Rankings following their 26-18 defeat to Hunslet, despite sitting second in the League 1 table.
6. Sheffield Eagles (DOWN 3)
The Eagles have been impressive so far, but their 36-10 loss to Championship leaders Wakefield Trinity has seen them drop a few places in our rankings.
5. Widnes Vikings (UP 3)
Widnes have been the surprise package in the Championship, sitting third in the table with six wins from seven games under the leadership of Allan Coleman.
4. Wigan Warriors (UP 1)
The reigning Super League champions have responded well to their recent defeat, securing a comfortable 30-8 victory over Catalans Dragons.
3. Hull KR (UP 3)
Willie Peters’ side have climbed three places after their impressive 40-20 win over St Helens, further showcasing their credentials as a force to be reckoned with.
2. Oldham (UP 2)
The ambitious Roughyeds, led by Great Britain legend Sean Long, have made a mighty start to the League 1 season, winning all six of their games so far.
1. Wakefield Trinity (-)
Daryl Powell’s Trinity remain at the top of our Power Rankings, having won all seven of their Championship games and boasting an impressive points difference.
