Rugby League News: Leigh Leopards Captain John Asiata’s Move to Hull FC Announced Suddenly
Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam has revealed that he and the club learned about captain John Asiata’s move to Hull FC at the same time as everyone else, when the Airlie Birds announced the signing on Friday.
Asiata, whose contract expires at the end of the current season, will join Hull on a three-year deal from 2025. Lam confirmed that there was no prior announcement from the Leopards, as the decision was made by Hull to make the announcement on their end.
Lam expressed his affection for Asiata, acknowledging the significant contribution he has made to the club, particularly as the captain who lifted the Challenge Cup last year. The coach emphasized that there are no hard feelings towards the player, recognizing that the decision is likely a financial one that is best for Asiata and his family.

However, the Leopards have also suffered a fresh injury blow, with Asiata set to miss the next four to six weeks due to a hamstring strain. Lam stated that the 31-year-old former Samoa and Tonga international will now focus on his rehabilitation and return to captain the team when he is ready.
Despite the sudden departure and the injury setback, Lam believes that Asiata’s exit could potentially make the Leopards better as a team. The coach remains positive about the future, determined to move forward and build on the club’s successes.
