Wigan’s Liam Byrne Delighted to Return After Suspension
Wigan Warriors prop Liam Byrne has expressed his delight at returning to the field after serving a four-match suspension. The Ireland international made his comeback in Wigan’s 30-8 victory over Catalans Dragons on Thursday, having previously been sent off against St Helens on Good Friday.
Byrne noted that the time off allowed him to focus on his physical conditioning, working extensively with the strength and conditioning team to ensure he came back in top shape.
“I did plenty of conditioning work, plenty of running, just working on my strength in the gym, working on my legs has been quite a big thing for me,” he said.
The front-rower acknowledged the fierce competition for places within the Wigan squad, with several talented players pushing hard for selection in Matt Peet’s matchday 17. Byrne’s fellow pack members Sam Walters, Sam Eseh, Harvie Hill, and Tiaki Chan will all feature for the reserves this weekend against Hull KR.
“It feels like the most middles we’ve had, every single of one of them are unbelievably talented so they are great people to have around you and it’s really good competition as well,” Byrne commented. “They are great lads to play alongside and they keep you on your toes every week.”
With the win over Catalans Dragons, Wigan have returned to winning ways, and Byrne is eagerly anticipating the team’s next challenge – a trip to the John Smith’s Stadium to take on Huddersfield Giants in Round 11 of Super League.
