South Sydney Rabbitohs Remain Focused on Signing St Helens Scrum-Half Lewis Dodd Despite Coaching Change
The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ decision to part ways with head coach Jason Demetriou earlier this week has not altered their plans to secure the services of St Helens scrum-half Lewis Dodd from the 2025 season onwards.
Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly confirmed at a media conference on Wednesday that the club is “close” to striking a deal with Dodd, with the team’s football manager Mark Ellison currently in England to finalize the transfer and scout for additional talent to bolster the Bunnies’ roster for 2025.
Solly emphasized that the identity of the Rabbitohs’ next head coach will not impact whether or not Dodd joins the club, as the recruitment and retention process at South Sydney typically involves a collaborative effort between the coach, CEO, CFO, and football manager.
“First of all, we haven’t quite signed Lewis yet. We’re close and we’re hopeful, but I think that over time at this club, we’ve been strong in that the coach has an influence in recruitment and retention, but they don’t have the final say,” Solly explained.
The Rabbitohs CEO also dismissed the possibility of appointing Warrington Wolves’ current head coach, and former South Sydney player, Sam Burgess, saying the club would not want to “disrupt” the leadership group at the Wolves.
With the Dodd deal nearing completion and the search for a new head coach underway, the Rabbitohs remain focused on building a squad capable of challenging for the rugby league title in 2025 and beyond.
