Rugby League News: The Uncertainty of Super League’s Future Composition
The upcoming 2025 campaign marks a significant shift in the structure of Super League, as the competition’s composition will be entirely determined by grading criteria. While this approach is a point of contention, it certainly creates a sense of uncertainty within the rugby league community.
As it stands, seven clubs have secured Grade A status, with Hull FC narrowly making the cut with 15.05 points, just above the 15-point threshold. Despite the club’s poor form throughout 2023, it is expected that even if Hull FC lose their Grade A status, they will still retain a substantial number of points.
Similarly, Huddersfield Giants and Salford Red Devils are anticipated to maintain their Super League status, with Salford having addressed any stadium-related issues earlier this year.
The future of clubs like Leigh Leopards, Castleford Tigers, and London Broncos, however, remains a guessing game. Interestingly, Toulouse Olympique and Wakefield Trinity, both Championship sides, were actually ranked higher than Leigh and Castleford in the preliminary gradings. London Broncos, sitting in 24th place, have revealed a “proposal” to secure their Super League status through alternative means, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the league’s composition.
As the sport braces for movement between Super League and the Championship in 2025, three Championship teams stand out as potential contenders for a spot in the top flight:
Wakefield Trinity: With the signings of high-profile players like Mike McMeeken and Tom Johnstone on long-term deals, and their positioning within the top 12 in the preliminary gradings, Wakefield Trinity seems poised for a return to Super League.
Toulouse Olympique: The French side scored highly in the preliminary gradings, but there are questions about their efforts to further improve their status since then. The potential loss of their 12th-place finish from 2021 could prove crucial.
Bradford Bulls: The prospect of seeing the Bradford Bulls back in the top tier is a tantalizing one, but their aging Odsal stadium remains a significant obstacle. Substantial redevelopment or investment in their facilities would be necessary for the Bulls to make a successful bid for Super League.
As the rugby league community eagerly awaits the final grading decisions, the uncertainty surrounding the 2025 Super League composition promises to keep fans and pundits alike on the edge of their seats.
