Super League’s Top English Wingers Shining in 2024
While wingers often steal the spotlight as their team’s most prolific try-scorers, the current crop of English outside backs in Super League is proving to be an exceptional bunch. Veteran Ryan Hall is chasing down the all-time Super League try-scoring record, but does the 36-year-old still crack the top five English wingers in 2024? Serious About Rugby League ranks the best English wings in the competition so far this season.
Controversially, Hall has secured a spot in the top five, with a couple of high-profile names – Tommy Makinson and Tom Johnstone – missing out. Johnstone enjoyed a breakout 2023 campaign after moving to Catalans, earning consideration for the Man of Steel award, but he hasn’t hit the same heights in 2024. Makinson, the St Helens stalwart, has been relatively quieter this year compared to his previous two seasons, where he amassed a combined 46 tries for the Red Vee.
5. Ryan Hall
At number five, Ryan Hall remains invaluable to Hull KR, utilizing his large frame and physicality to be one of the best ball-carriers in the competition. Despite a decline in pace, the veteran winger has tallied 15 or more tries in each of his three seasons at Craven Park, and he’s closing in on the all-time Super League try-scoring record.
4. Matty Ashton
Warrington’s Matty Ashton claims the fourth spot, building on his impressive 2023 season with 20 tries. The speedster’s England experience in the Test series against Tonga has clearly bolstered his status in Super League, and he’ll be a strong contender for the national team’s next call-up.
3. Ash Handley
At number three, Leeds Rhinos’ Ash Handley made his England debut last season, scoring a hat-trick against France. While injury issues have slowed his progress, his early-season form suggests he should be among the first names on Shaun Wane’s teamsheet.
2. Liam Marshall
Wigan’s Liam Marshall takes the second spot, having scored an impressive 50 tries over the past two seasons. With 9 tries in the first 9 rounds and 6 in the Challenge Cup, Marshall is well on his way to maintaining his 25-try-per-season average, and his exceptional carry numbers and yardage make him a nightmare for opposing defenses.
1. Adam Swift
Topping the list is Huddersfield Giants’ Adam Swift, who has been the signing of the season so far. After leaving Hull FC, where he scored 19 tries in 2023, Swift has been electric in 2024, already scoring 15 tries in just 11 games – nearly outscoring the entire Hull FC squad. Swift’s blistering pace, clean breaks, and impressive meters gained make him a clear standout as the best English winger in Super League this season.
