The 2024 Super League Season Kicks Off with a Flurry of Red Cards
The 2024 Super League campaign has already seen its fair share of controversy, with a number of red cards being handed out in the opening rounds. From the debut red card for Hull FC’s Franklin Pele to the high-profile incident involving Wigan Warriors’ Adam Keighran, the Match Review Panel has been kept busy this season.
In the very first game of the season, Pele was shown a red card for a swinging arm on Hull KR captain Elliot Minchella, earning him a three-match ban. His teammate Ligi Sao also saw red in the same match, initially receiving a three-game suspension that was later reduced to one on appeal.
Controversy continued to follow Hull FC, as they’ve been issued the most red cards and third-most yellow cards of any Super League side this season. Other notable red cards include Liam Watts of Castleford Tigers and Micky McIlorum of Catalans Dragons, both receiving four-match bans for contact with the head.
The most recent talking point, however, is the red card shown to Wigan’s Keighran for a high shot on Warrington’s Arron Lindop. Keighran now faces an anxious wait to see if he will be banned for the upcoming Challenge Cup Final, a fate that many fans and pundits expect.
“Anything less for Keighran would be a surprise, given the precedent set by the Match Review Panel this season.”
While some players have managed to escape bans after being sent off, the majority of those charged with high shots and head contact have been handed four-match suspensions.
